Hats, circa 1880-1900

Scope and Contents

1. Garden hat Soft straw, lined with muslin (inside crown) and brown velvet (underside of brim).

2. Church hat. Black cloth over [straw?] base. Decorated with sequined lace around brim and black tulle and black fabric flowers (buds and leaves), green and orange [pipe cleaner-like?] flowers, and black feathers with [plastic?] flowers at tips. Long black velvet ribbon ties. Two hatpins (7” and 2”) with black [glass?] round heads.

Donor’s note “Garden Hat & Black Hat. Belonged to Rebecca C. Holmes, who was a milliner and seamstress. Born 1862 Died 1957. Sister of Albert E. Holmes.”

3. Odd Fellow helmet. Black cloth soft helmet-shaped hat with rounded brim. Trimmed with thin silver hatband over grograin ribbon around crown. Silver embroidered patch at front: three interlocking rings and “189.” Lined with woven straw (now disintegrating), leather headband inside. Cloth label “ABORN, Washington/Boston” pinned to inside cloth lining strips (once covered seams, now detached from crown).

Donor’s note “Odd Fellows Hat. Belonged to Albert E. Holmes, 246 Main Street. Kingston, Mass. Born 1860 Died 1934.”

Donor reports that the hats were in the attic of her house at 246 Main Street for years, and that she got the birth and death dates of the hat owners from their grave markers in Evergreen Cemetery.
